GOOGLE   LATITUDE

The Google Latitude service was originally created by Google to provide users access to selected friends location on Google Maps. Latitude is following Google Reader. The service will disappear on August 9th, Google announced today. The Google Latitude service was originally created to provide users access to selected friends' locations on Google Maps. The services that will retire include Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website at maps.google.com/latitude.

Google explains that they will delete your list of friends on Latitude and you will no longer be able to see or manage friends and existing friends will no longer see your location.

Google announced a new version of Google Maps for iOS and Android (version 7.0) on Tuesday. Google hasn't technically declared it, but Latitude appears to be the latest service casualty to fall to the company's expanding focus on Google+. The latest version of Google+ for Android includes the ability to check in to locations using Yelp and Foursquare and share current locations in new posts.

Those who want more on-the-go minute location data from consenting friends and family appear to be left without an option starting August.

The new Google Maps app has some changes that users may not appreciate so much. The 'My Maps' support for instance has gone though Google says it will return in a future version.

ARTIFICIAL SKIN

E-skin! Researchers have discovered a new and cheaper method to develop 'artificial skin' which can sense touch, humidity and temperature just like the real skin. Using tiny gold particles and a kind of resin, a team of scientists at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel has found how to make a new kind of flexible sensor that could be integrated into electronic skin, or e-skin.

The new system is at least 10 times more sensitive in touch than the currently existing touch-based e-skin systems, researchers said. If scientists learn how to attach e-skin to prosthetic limbs, people with amputations might once again be able to feel changes in their environments, they said. The secret lies in the sensor's ability to detect three kinds of data simultaneously. While current kinds of e-skin detect only touch, the new invention "can simultaneously sense touch, humidity, and temperature, as real skin can do," said research team leader Professor Hossam Haick.

Additionally, the new system "is at least 10 times more sensitive in touch than the currently existing touch-based e-skin systems," said Haick. Researchers have long been interested in flexible sensors, but have had trouble adapting them for real-world use.

To make its way into mainstream society, a flexible sensor would have to run on low voltage (so it would be compatible with the batteries in today's portable devices), measure a wide range of pressures, and make more than one measurement at a time, including humidity, temperature, pressure, and the presence of chemicals.

 CHINESE INSTITUTE DEVELOPS 100-MEGAPIXEL CAMERA

A Chinese institute claimed to have successfully developed a 100-megapixel camera which could produce high-resolution imaging in the fields of aerial mapping, disaster monitoring and intelligent transportation systems.

The IOE3-Kanban camera was developed by the Institute of Optics and Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences making it China's highest pixel camera, CAS said in a statement.

The camera is capable of producing images with 10,240 x 10,240 pixels, the statement said.

Moreover, it is small and light, with its widest part measuring only 19.3 cm, state-run Xinhua quoted the statement as saying, adding that it can be used at temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees centigrade to 55 degrees centigrade.

Its high sensitivity and high dynamic range (HDR) features mean it will be useful in high-resolution imaging in the fields of aerial mapping, city planning, disaster monitoring and intelligent transportation systems, the statement said.

Intelligent transportation system is aimed to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management, enabling various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks.

The camera is equipped with advanced optical systems, camera control systems and high-capacity data recording systems, and it has proven successful in a recent trial use as a part of a national aerial remote-sensing system, it said.

The institute also developed an 81-megapixel camera during the 10th Five Year Plan period (2001-2005), and the latest achievement took the researchers two years to develop.

A megapixel is one million pixels, and is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras or the number of display elements of digital displays
